Thailand’s Olympic medalist bantamweight boxer Worapoj Petchkhoom has been banned from amateur boxing for three months, disallowing him to compete at the upcoming SEA Games in Laos, as a punishment for modeling for a gay magazine.

According to earlier reports, the Athens Games silver medalist appeared nearly naked in the Thai gay magazine STAGE, sparking the attention of the media and the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) which said national athletes are supposed to uphold good image. Worapoj, in defending his action, said the images, including the one on the magazine cover, were “sporty” and not obscene.

However, ABAT president General Taweep Jantararoj said at a press conference on August 26 that the association has decided to ban Worapoj from the national boxing squad for three months, which will bar him from representing Thailand in the upcoming SEA Games in Laos at the end of this year. Taweep said Worapoj’s images in the gay magazine are not considered obscene, but still they have tarnished the reputation of the national athletes.

In the same press conference, General Taweep also announced about the upcoming fifth national youth boxing tournament, which will be held at the Mall Bangkae in Bangkok on September 1-7.

The youth amateur event will host competitions in nine weight classes for male and eight for female. General Taweep said he expects about 40 sport clubs to send their athletes to compete in the tournament.

The youth tournament, as well as the World Championships 2009 in Milan, Italy, on September 1-13, will test many first-time national athletes like Kaew Pongprayoon and Wutthichai Masuk, said the ABAT chief.

He also said he was surprised to find out that the scores of the World Championships fights would not be shown during the match, which he said was unsual.

He said the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to change the three female boxing weight class at the London Games in 2012 from 51, 60, and 75 kilograms to 57, 60, and 64 kilograms would be disadvantageous to the Asian athletes.

ทวีปแบนวรพจน์ 3เดือนพ้นซีเกมส์ เล็งหาดาวรุ่งมวยเยาวชนกรุงไทยลุยยูธโอลิมปิก

พลเอกทวีป จันทรโรจน์ นายกสมาคมมวยสากลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ เป็นประธานแถลงข่าวการแข่งขันมวยสากลสมัครเล่นเยาวชนชาย-หญิงชิงชนะเลิศแห่งประเทศไทยครั้งที่ 5 รายการ "กรุงไทย แบงก์ แชมเปี้ยนชิพส์" ที่ห้องสมประสงค์ 2 รร.เฟิร์ส โฮเต็ล เมื่อ 26 ส.ค.ที่ผ่านมา

สำหรับศึก "กรุงไทยแบงก์ แชมเปี้ยนชิพส์" จะมีขึ้นระหว่าง 1-7 ก.ย. ที่ห้องเอ็มซีซี ฮอลล์ เดอะ มอลล์ บางแค ชิงเงินรางวัลกว่า 1 แสนบาท จะจัดแข่งขันประเภทเยาวชนชายดยทั้งหมด 9 รุ่นคือ 42 ก.ก., 45 ก.ก., 48 ก.ก., 51 ก.ก., 54 ก.ก., 57 ก.ก., 60 ก.ก., 64 ก.ก. และ 69 ก.ก. และประเภทเยาวชนหญิง 8 รุ่น คือ 42 ก.ก., 44 ก.ก., 46 ก.ก., 48 ก.ก., 51 ก.ก., 54 ก.ก., 57 ก.ก. และ 60 ก.ก. โดยผู้เข้าแข่งขันจะต้องเกิดภายในปี พ.ศ.2533-2536 ซึ่งคาดว่าจะมี 40 สโมสรส่งนักชกเข้าชิงชัย

นายกกำปั้นไทยยังเผยถึงความพร้อมในการส่งนักชก 6 คน เข้าแข่งขันไอบา เวิลด์ แชมเปี้ยนชิพส์ ที่อิตาลี ระหว่าง 1-13 ก.ย. โดยนักชกทีมชาติไทยประกอบด้วย แก้ว พงษ์ประยูร (48 ก.ก.), อำนาจ รื่นเริง (51 ก.ก.), ฉัตรชัย บุตรดี (54 ก.ก.), วุฒิชัย มาสุข (57 ก.ก.), สายลม อาดี (60 ก.ก.) และอภิเชษฐ์ แสนสิทธิ์ (64 ก.ก.)

พลเอกทวีปกล่าวว่า ในการแข่งขัน "กรุงไทย แบงก์ฯ" นอกจากกลุ่มอายุดังกล่าวแล้วสมาคมจะจับตามองนักชกที่เกิดในช่วง พ.ศ.2535-2536 ด้วย เพื่อนำมาเสริมทัพชุดสู้ศึกยูธโอลิมปิกเกมส์ ที่สิงคโปร์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2553 ด้วย ส่วนมวยเวิลด์คัพเชื่อว่านักชกเลือดใหม่อย่าง แก้ว, อำนาจ และ วุฒิชัย จะสร้างเซอร์ไพรส์ได้ ซึ่งรายการนี้จะเป็นครั้งแรกที่ไม่มีการแสดงสกอร์ระหว่างแข่งขัน แต่จะแสดงคะแนนเมื่อสิ้นสุดยกการแข่งขันเท่านั้น ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นเรื่องที่น่าแปลก

สำหรับมวยสากลหญิงในโอลิมปิกเกมส์ ทางคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกสากล(ไอโอซี) ได้บรรจุเข้าแข่งขันในโอลิมปิกเกมส์ 2012 จำนวน 3 รุ่น ซึ่งเดิมมีรุ่น 51, 60 และ 75 ก.ก. แต่ล่าสุดเปลี่ยนไปเป็นรุ่น 57, 60, 64 ก.ก. ซึ่งถือว่านักชกจากเอเชียเสียเปรียบสาวยุโรปแน่นอน

ส่วนในกรณีของวรพจน์ เพชรขุ้ม นักชกเหรียญเงินโอลิมปิกเกมส์ 2004 ที่ไปถ่ายแบบในนิตยสารชายรักชายจนตกเป็นข่าวครึกโครมนั้น เรื่องนี้พลเอกทวีป กล่าวว่า ทางสมาคมเห็นควรลงโทษวรพจน์พักการซ้อมเป็นเวลา 3 เดือน ซึ่งหมายความว่า วรพจน์จะไม่ได้ชกในการแข่งขันซีเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 25 ด้วย เนื่องจากภาพดังกล่าวแม้จะดูไม่น่าเกลียดแต่ถือว่าเสียภาพพจน์ของนักกีฬา
