A Macau firm will hire 5,000 Thais to work as security guards in hotels--and bouncers in entertainment venues--in the southern Chinese gambling centre, Thailand's Minister of Labour, Somsak Thepsuthin said Wednesday.
Muscular former Thai boxers are in demand--politeness with a punch!--to bring power-packed security with a (Thai) smile.
Mr. Somsak told reporters of the plan after he met with a representative for Macau's Shun Tak Holding Limited that the ministry will appoint a committee to send Thai workers overseas and its first target will be to expand Thai labour market in the southern Chinese enclave of Macau.
The Macau businessman was reported to have informed the Thai minister that his company had expanded its investment and would build more hotels and entertainment venues during the next five years.
He said the firm would need to employ some 50,000 foreign workers and would be interested in bringing 5,000 workers from Thailand to work as security guards.
Forty-three Thai workers are currently employed in Macau, Mr. Somsak said. The minister said the Macau firm was impressed both with the honesty and hospitality of Thai guards--mostly former professional Thai kick boxers--who currently work for the company.
He said the ministry would propose to the Ministry of Education to include Chinese language into university curricula and to train more workers to meet rising demands for skilled labourers. Source: mcot.net 4 September 2007 |
