Seventy-seven Countries Challenge in Beijing Games

Seventy-seven countries send the boxers to challenge in the Olympic 2008. Africa 19 countries 60 boxers, America 15 countries 60 boxers, Asia 15 countries 62 boxers, Europe 23 countries 91 boxers, and Oceania 3 countries 11 boxers, as well as Swaziland and Grenada which get the wild card  , total 286 boxers from 77 countries.

Russia sends boxers to fight in 11 classes, China, Kazakhstan and Cuba send 10 classes, USA, France, and Australia send 9 classes, Algeria, England, Ukraine, and Thailand send 8 classes, Uzbekistan sends 7 classes, Dominican, Venezuela, and Italy send 6 classes, South Korea, Columbia, Puerto Rico, India, Brazil, Hungary and Ireland send 5 classes.

Thai boxers who will be the nation representative are Amnat Ruenroeng (under 45 kgs), Somjit Jongjorhor (51 kgs), Worapoj Petchkoom (54 kgs), Sailom Ardee (57kgs), Pichai Sayotha (60 kgs), Manas Boonjamnong (64 kgs), Non Boonjamnong (69 kgs), and Angkarn Chompoopuang (75kgs).

 

 
Thai team made a good start

Ching-Kua Wu, president of Amateur International Boxing Association or AIBA, held the A.I.B.A. President Cup 2008 at Shinjung, Taiwan. The objectives of the program are to help boxers get ready for the Beijing Games 2008 and to train 34 referees who work in the Beijing Games.
The gold medal holder will get 2,000 US dollars, silver medal holder will get 1,500 US dollars and bronze medal holder will get 500 US dollars.

Flyweight class (51 kilograms): Somjit Jongjorhor, silver medal world championship 2007 holder, won over Anvar Yunusov, an amateur boxer from Tajikistan and the gold medal world championship 2003 holder, by score card and he got the gold medal.

Bantamweight class (54 kilograms): Worapoj Petchkoom, silver medal Olympic 2004 holder, lost Samir Mammadov, a boxer from Azerbaijan, by score cord and Worapoj grabbed the silver medal.

Lightweight class (60 kilograms): Pichai Sayotha, King’s cup best boxer, was not allowed to fight because of his swelled face. Therefore, Kim Song

Worapoj confirms Thai team goes Olympic without Juan Fontanial

Worapoj Petchkoom, Thai amateur boxer, confirms Thai team will be successful in Olympic Games 2008 without Juan Fontanial, Cuba Coach. Thai team has been practicing for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, China in August. Juan Fontanial was called back to his country, people are afraid that Thai team might lose a chance to win in this Olympic Games.

Worapoj, Olympic 2004 Silver medal holder, confirms all the practicing schedule is the same schedule that Juan Fontanial has planned for the team.
        
“I don’t think it’s different, we still practice in the same schedule, and nothing has changed. We are professional enough to train on the schedule” Worapoj said.

 
THAILAND Grabbed King's Cup

30th Amateur Boxing King’s cup was held on April 9th at The Mall, Ngamwongwan. Weerasak Kowsurat, ministry of travel and sport minister, was the competition chairperson. Thailand fought for 5 matches in 5 classes as follows:

Light Flyweight class: Amnat Ruenrueng, bronze medal world championship holder, fought against Kaew Pongprayoon, B-team national athlete. Kaew surrendered in the 2nd round. Amnat won with score 2-1.

Flyweight class: Somjit Jongjorhor, gold medal world championship holder, got the golden medal from Zou Shiming from China who got hurt and couldn’t fight.

Thai boxer beat Asian Games silver medalist

Thailand’s Vorapot Phetkhum defeated South Korean Han Soon Choon to book his birth in the quarter-final of the Olympic qualification first leg in Thai capital.
Worapot defeated Asian Games silver medalist 22-7 to set a quarter-final round against Uzbekistan boxer who defeated Silankan fighter.
Even he was not in his best form yet but Worapot said the victory boosts him confident to grab the place for Olympic final in Beijing.
“I am now 85 percent confident to have my place for Beijing. I just left 15 percent for any accident,” he said.
However, General Thaweep Chantaroj, warned his three Thai boxers to fight carefully and make sure to book their places for the upcoming Olympic.
