Kaew, Wutthichai win golds in Asian Boxing Championships

Thai amateur boxing athletes Kaew Pongprayoon and Wutthichai Masuk have won gold medals from the Asian Boxing Championships in Zhuhai, China, on last Sunday.

Two out of five Thai athletes advanced to the finals of the Asian Boxing Championships on June 14. Kaew and India’s Youth world champion Thokchom Nanao Singh had a closely matched fight in the lightweight final, with both athletes scoring eight points until the last 15 seconds of the last round, when Kaew scored the decisive ninth point from a counter strike to his opponent’s face.

Nanao tried to even out the points but the Thai kept distance and refused to let him engage until the round ended. Kaew emerged as the first Thai to win a gold medal at the event.

Wutthichai seemed to have a more comfortable fight as he defeated Uzbekistan’s rising star Hurshid Tajibayev by score of 12-5 in the featherweight final.

Thailand’s amateur boxing coach Kammanit Nareerat praised Wutthichai for his calmness and determination in winning a gold medal from his first international tournament. He said Wutthichai would be a “hope” of the Thai squad in the future events including the London Olympic Games in 2012.

However, he said Kaew had a “heart-squelching” match that requires improvised strategic thinking, but he said Kaew is skilled enough to not lose control of the game.

Thailand has won two gold medals in total as well as another bronze from Olympian Amnat Ruenroeng who lost to India’s Suranjoy Singh in the flyweight. According to the earlier reports, some bouts of the Thai boxers and their opponents, especially the Indians, have generated some criticisms on the neutrality of the judges and referees.

การ แข่งขันมวยสากลสมัครเล่นชิงแชมป์เอเชีย รายการที่มีการตัดสินดั้นเมฆจนเกิดปัญหาวุ่นวายมาตั้งแต่รอบแรกๆ ของการแข่งขัน ล่าสุดเมื่อวันที่ 14 มิ.ย. อันเป็นวันสุดท้ายของทัวร์นาเมนต์ ที่สังเวียนจูไห่ สปอร์ตเซ็นเตอร์ เมืองจูไห่ ประเทศจีน เป็นการชกในรอบชิงชนะเลิศ มีนักชกไทยผ่านเข้ามาลุ้นเหรียญทอง 2 รุ่น รุ่นไลต์ฟลายเวต แก้ว พงษ์ประยูร พบนาโนอา ซิงห์ จากอินเดีย คะแนนสูสีมาเท่ากัน 8-8 จนกระทั่งเหลือเวลาอีก 15 วินาที แก้วได้จังหวะโยกหลอกให้นาโนอาต่อยแล้วสวนหมัดซ้ายเข้าเต็มหน้ากลายเป็นแต้ม ทองคำแต้มสุดท้าย จากนั้นแก้วก็กลับมาวนไปรอบเวทีปล่อยให้นักชกอินเดียไล่บ้าง แต่นาโนอาก็ไล่ไม่ทัน ครบยก แก้วชนะไปอย่างหวุดหวิด 9-8 คะแนน คว้าเหรียญทองได้สำเร็จเป็นคนแรกของทีมกำปั้นไทย

ส่วนอีกคู่เป็นรุ่น เฟเธอร์เวต วุฒิชัย มาสุข นักชกดาวรุ่งสายเลือดใหม่ พบกับโฮร์ชิ ทาจิบาเยฟ จากอุซเบกิสถาน ทาจิบาเยฟพยายามเปิดเกมเดินเข้าหาทันทีตั้งแต่ยกแรก แต่วุฒิชัยอาศัยการดึงจังหวะแล้วต่อยวงนอกได้อย่างจะแจ้งกว่า ครบยกวุฒิชัยเป็นฝ่ายเอาชนะไปขาดลอย 12-5 คะแนน คว้าเหรียญทองไปได้สำเร็จ สรุปผลงานขุนพลเสื้อกล้ามไทยคว้ามาได้ 2 เหรียญทองกับ 1 เหรียญทองแดงของอำนาจ รื่นเริง

หลังเกม "โค้ชแซม"กามนิตย์ นารีรักษ์ หัวหน้าสต๊าฟโค้ช เผยว่า คู่ของแก้วเป็นการชกที่บีบหัวใจที่สุด ต้องคอยแก้เกมชนิดยกต่อยก ดีที่แก้วนั้นมีประสบการณ์มากพอมิเช่นนั้นออกทะเลแน่นอน ส่วนวุฒิชัยถือว่าผลงานยอดเยี่ยม มีพร้อมทุกอย่างโดยเฉพาะความสุขุมแถมยังมีความมุ่งมั่น นี่เป็นครั้งแรกในรายการนานาชาติก็ประสบความสำเร็จถึงแชมป์เอเชียแล้ว ดังนั้นนักชกรายนี้ก็น่าจะเป็นความหวังของทีมชาติไทยได้เป็นอย่างดี รวมไปถึงโอลิมปิกที่ลอนดอนในอีก 3 ปีข้างหน้าอีกด้วย
