Thai promoter Piyarat Wachiraratanawong says the famous kickboxing tournament K-1 was modeled after his “muaythai marathon” event.

According to a press conference on June 10 in the northeastern Thai city of Nakorn Ratchasima, promoter Piyarat and the local officials will hold the title defense boxing bout of WBC youth strawweight champion Wanheng Meenayothin and Filipino challenger Roel Lagonero as well as the eight-fighter “muaythai marathon” tournament.

An earlier report cited promoter Piyarat as saying that the tournament will feature eight bantamweight fighters from the Lumpini stadium such as Palangtthip Kor Sapaothong, Prab Kaiyang Hadao Gym, and Lekkla Thanasuranakorn, all of whom have won Lumpini titles in the past.

Piyarat also said his “muaythai marathon” is the prototype of the Japan-based K-1, which was created by modifying the format of the Thai tournament after fighter Buakaw por Pramuk drew attention of the Japanese media by defeating a Japanese opponent in a marathon tournament eight years ago.
