Plan to ban child boxing blocked by Senate and muaythai figures PDF Print E-mail
The News - Muaythai
Written by Varut, Editor: Wissawa
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

The renewed attempt of the Ministry of Education to ban youth from fighting in professional muaythai matches has met resistance from the Senate and the influential figures in the sport.

The ministry wants to ban professional fighters younger than 15 from muaythai matches as well as prohibiting the training facilities to organize events for underage fighters.

Senator Worawut Rojanapanich brought the issue to the Senate and rallied supports from several members of the upper house. The Senate decided to request the ministry to “reconsider” its plan.

The banning attempt was a revival of a similar plan by a previous government that emerged when a child fighter was assaulted by his manager when he lost his bout at Samui. The proposal was debated but was never realized.

The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) has lifted the ban on Thai promoter “Ang Mor” Chucharoen Rawee-aramwong from matches in Japan.

The JBC earlier announced the banning after Chucharoen arranged a bout in Thailand for Japanese champion Joichiro Tatsuyoshi. The former WBC bantamweight champion, 39, is barred from fighting due to JBC regulations that force Japanese boxers to retire at the age of 36.

Muaythai veteran Thongchai Tor Silachai may find his way back to glory after winning two recent Ratchadamnern bouts.

The Korat fighter, whose real name is Thongchai Pakthai, has long been a favorite to both the crowds and the sport reporters. Fierce and skillful, Thongchai has claimed championship titles of both Ratchadamnern and Lumpini events despite his small stature when compared to most of his opponents.

The fighter, however, seemed to have fallen from grace when he was arrested earlier this year by the police in Nakorn Ratchasima for dealing illegal amphetamine drugs. Thongchai, 37, said he was losing income from muaythai as his matches became less frequent.

Sermsak Sor Sermpong may not be a well-known muaythai figure in Thailand, but to the muaythai fans in the Chinese city of Guangzhao, where Sermsak has been a muaythai trainer for seven years, he is a celebrity. Sermsak, known in Guangzhao as “Kru Noi”, has trained numerous students there and his famous Sor Sermpong training camp has been invited to perform muaythai shows all over China. The Thai fighter did not speak a single word of Chinese when he first arrived in China, but now he is fluent in the Cantonese dialect. The following excerpt is from the interview with Sermsak about the story behind his overseas success.

Can you tell us about the time when you were in Thailand?

“I was a muaythai fighter from the beginning. I started fighting when I was about 15 or 16 years old, coming to fight in Bangkok from my home town at Phitsanulok. I was fighting for about 20 years and called it quit at 36. You name the stadium and I will tell you I have fought there, especially those in the provinces. I have fought for more than 300 bouts. I was a trainer for young fighters too. Then someone asked me to work as a bodyguard in Macao.”
