The International Federation of Amateur Muaythai Association ( IFMA) is requesting the organizer of the upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) to rename the sport "muay" to "muaythai" and threatening to ban participating nations in its future event if its demand is not met, while trying to replace its rival muaythai association in organizing the sport at the Indoor Games in Vietnam in October.

IFMA president Sakchye Tapsuwan has reportedly sent a letter to the Southeast Asian Games Federation, threathening to ban the participating nations of the next SEA Games in in the Laotian capital Vientiane from the first World Martial Art Games in China in 2010 if the organizer refused to change the name of the sport.

In response to the report on IFMA's demand, Lieutenant General Charouck Arirachakaran, the secretary-general of the Thai National Olympic Council, said if Thailand proposed for the renaming of the SEA Games sport, other member countries like Laos and Myanmar would raise their objection, as they have always done so.

IFMA has also reportedly asked Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to assign it to organize the "muay" sport in the third Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam in October this year.

Lt. Gen. Charouck said he was not aware of IFMA's request to the OCA but said the OCA and the SEA Games member nations would be able to make decision on which muaythai organization they want to certify the competition of the sport in the events.

However, he pointed out that a court has ruled that the Muaythai Association of Thailand, the state-endorsed muaythai authority and a long-time rival of IFMA, has the rights to select athletes for the the SEA Games and Indoor Games.

Santipab Intrapat, president of the Muaythai Association of Thailand, has confirmed that his organization, not the IFMA, was selected to organize the muay sport at the Indoor Games. He said he disagrees with IFMA's lobbying attempt as it could rekindle the long-time conflict of the two rival organizations.

สหพันธ์มวยไทยนานาชาติ (อิฟมา) ส่งหนังสือถึงสหพันธ์กีฬาซีเกมส์ ต้องใช้คำว่า "มวยไทย" แทนคำว่า "มวย" ในกีฬาซีเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 25 ที่ลาวปลายปีนี้ "บิ๊กจา" พล.ต.จารึก อารีราชการัณย์ รองประธานโอลิมปิกไทยแห่งประเทศไทย ยกให้สหพันธ์กีฬาซีเกมส์เป็นผู้ตัดสิน

ตามที่นายศักดิ์ชาย ทัพสุวรรณ ประธานสหพันธ์มวยไทยนานาชาติ (อิฟมา) ส่งหนังสือถึงสภาโอลิมปิกแห่งเอเชีย (โอซีเอ) เพื่อขอคำยืนยันว่าจะมอบหมายให้อิฟมาดำเนินการจัดและรับรองการแข่งขันมวยในกีฬาเอเชี่ยนอินดอร์เกมส์ ครั้งที่ 3 ที่เวียดนามจะเป็นเจ้าภาพ วันที่ 30 ตุลาคม-8 พฤศจิกายนนี้ และยังส่งหนังสือถึงสหพันธ์ซีเกมส์เพื่อขอให้เปลี่ยนแปลงชื่อกีฬา "มวย" เป็น "มวยไทย" ในกีฬาซีเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 25 มิเช่นนั้นจะอิฟมาจะตัดสิทธิชาติสมาชิกที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันทั้ง 2 รายการออกจากการเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันเวิลด์มาร์เชียลอาร์ตเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 1 ปี 2010 ที่จีนนั้น

พล.ต.จารึก อารีราชการัณย์ รองประธานและเลขาธิการคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกแห่งประเทศไทย เปิดเผยว่า ยังไม่ทราบว่ามีหนังสือดังกล่าวส่งไปยังสำนักงานโอซีเอ ที่ประเทศคูเวตหรือไม่ รวมถึงยังไม่มีการประสานใดๆ มาจากโอซีเอ อย่างไรก็ตามส่วนตัวมีความเห็นว่าคงไม่เป็นปัญหาใหญ่มากมาย เพราะโอซีเอและประเทศสมาชิกคงตัดสินใจว่าจะมอบหมายให้สหพันธ์มวยไทยแห่งเอเชียองค์กรใดเป็นผู้รับรองการแข่งขัน ในส่วนของกีฬาซีเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 25 ที่ลาว ระหว่างวันที่ 9-18 ธันวาคม หากอิฟมาเสนอให้มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อ "มวย" เป็น "มวยไทย" คงต้องหารือในที่ประชุมสหพันธ์กีฬาซีเกมส์ แต่หากไทยเป็นฝ่ายเสนอไปคิดว่าคงจะเหมือนที่ผ่านมา คือลาว และพม่า จะคัดค้านโดยตลอด

ส่วนการส่งนักกีฬามวยไทยเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันทั้งซีเกมส์ และเอเชี่ยนอินดอร์เกมส์ นั้น พล.ต.จารึก กล่าวว่า โอลิมปิกไทยซึ่งมีหน้าที่โดยตรงยังคงยืนยันเช่นเดิมว่าในกีฬาเอเชี่ยนอินดอร์เกมส์ จะมอบหมายให้สมาคมมวยไทยแห่งประเทศไทย ที่มีนายสันติภาพ อินทรพัฒน์ เป็นนายกสาคม เป็นผู้รับผิดชอบคัดเลือกและส่งนักกีฬาเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน เช่นเดียวกับกีฬาซีเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 25 เนื่องจากคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกต้องยึดตามคำสั่งศาลปกครองตราบใดที่ยังไม่มีคำตัดสินเป็นอย่างอื่น

นายสันติภาพกล่าวว่า ไม่เห็นด้วยที่อิฟมาออกมาตรการดังกล่าว ถึงเวลานี้ตนไม่อยากที่จะทำอะไรแล้วเกิดความขัดแย้งใดๆ เกิดขึ้นอีกระหว่างสมาคมมวยไทยทั้ง 2 สมาคม แต่ในส่วนของกีฬาเอเชี่ยนอินดอร์เกมส์ ครั้งที่ 3 เวียดนามในฐานะเจ้าภาพได้มอบหมายให้ตนเป็นผู้ดำเนินการและได้มาหารือเรื่องการจัดมวยปรีเอเชี่ยนอินดอร์เกมส์ ครั้งที่ 3 ที่เวียดนาม ระหว่างวันที่ 15-21 กรกฎาคมนี้ ด้วย
