Pacquiao rejected deal to fight De La Hoya PDF Print E-mail

WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines has rejected to fight the legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya in what would become the latter’s last match before retirement, says Pacquiao’s lawyer.

Lawyer Franklin Gacal who represented Pacquiao announced on August 14 that the Filipino champion has declined the proposal from De La Hoya to arrange a fight of the two boxers on December 6.

Pacquiao’s next fight would instead be the WBC lightweight title defending match in November at Las Vegas with Mexican boxer Humberto Soto, according to Gacal.

The Filipino champion was one of the four candidates De La Hoya chose to be his opponent on the December 6 event which De La Hoya said would be his last professional boxing match. The Mexican American wanted to fight in the super welterweight class, although Paquiao is currently fighting in the lightweight that is several weight classes lighter than the De La Hoya’s proposal.

According to Gacal, De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) refused to split 40% the earning of the December 6 match to Pacquiao and instead insisted on the original 70- 30 sharing scheme.

Gacal said the GBP proposal was unacceptable, although it would be an honor for Pacquiao to fight with De La Hoya in his last professional match.

Pacquiao has been a world champion of four different weight classes including the 112, 122, 130, and 135 pounds, said his trainer Freddie Roach.

Roach still wants Pacquiao to fight De La Hoya and said he would attempt to persuade the boxer to re-consider the proposal. He told to the reporter of the Manila Bulletin that the match of Pacquiao and Soto would be nonsensical as he has prepared Pacquiao for the fight with De La Hoya.

Roach was confident Pacquiao would be able to defeat De La Hoya.
