Bantamweight boxer Worapoj Petchkoom will fight Cuban Yankiel Leon Alarcon on August 18 at the Beijing Games to take his chance on securing his second Olympic medal. Both Leon and Worapoj received a bye in the Beijing round of 32. In the round of 16, Worapoj defeat Jahyn Vittorio Parrinello of Italian by a 12-1 win, while Leon won over Kanat Abutalipov of Kazakhstan by 10-3. The quarterfinal match, scheduled at 6 p.m. on Monday August 18, will pit Thailand’s Athens silver medalist Worapoj against Cuba’s Leon who paved his way to the Olympics from youth boxing. Leon won a gold medal from the flyweight event of the World Junior Championship at Budapest, Hungary, in 2002. He only joined the Cuban national team in 2007 and then received a bronze medal from the Pan-American Championship in Ecuador earlier this year. Worapoj said he never fought against the Cuban but regarded him as a strong opponent. “We have never fought with each other, but as far as I have seen, he is a type of fighter who has a tight defense and is diligent in launching strikes. Although he is a younger boxer, his talent is no less than his older Cuban counterparts. However, I have prepared a way to fight his style. I will fight with my best and will not allow the Thai spectators to disappoint,” said Worapoj. News: Siamsport |
