Thai boxers at the 2008 Olympic Games

Eight Thai Olympic boxers competed at the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing on August 9-23, but only two medals were won, a gold by flyweight Somjit Jongjohor and a silver by light welterweight Manus Boonjumnong, who has become the first Thai to ever win two Olympic medals.

After 12 years of amateur boxing, the 33-year-old Somjit was able to claim all the five wins without much difficulty before becoming the Beijing flyweight champion. Somjit’s five opponents, in time order, were Abdelillah Nhaila of Morocco (6-1), Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan (10-2), Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan (8-1), Vincenzo Picardi of Italy (7-1), and Andry Laffita Hernandez of Cuba (8-2).

Athens Games gold medalist Manus returned to the Olympics for the second time and became the first Thai athlete to win two medals. He received a silver medal after being defeated by Manuel Félix Díaz of the Dominican Republic (12:4) in the light welterweight final. He earlier defeated Masatsugu Kawachi of Japan (8:1), Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan (7:5), and Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo of Cuba (10:5).

Light flyweight Amnat Ruenroeng was able to defeat Jack Willie of Papua New Guinea (14-2) and Winston Montero of the Dominican Republic (7-3), but lost to Purevdorj Serdamba of Mongolia (2-5) in the quarterfinal. The judges’ scoring of the last match has been criticized by those who believed Amnat’s performance was stronger.

Bantamweight Worapoj Petchkhoom beat Jahyn Vittorio Parrinello (12-1) but lost to Yankiel Leon of Cuba (2-10) in the quarterfinal.

Featherweight Sailom Adi was defeated in his first bout against Abdelkader Chadi of Algeria (6-7) in the round of 16.

Lightweight Pichai Sayotha lost to Baik Jong-Sub of South Korea (4-10) in the round of 16.

Welterweight Non Boonjumnong, a younger brother of Manus and a hot favorite of the Thai boxing squad, was upset by Hosam Abdin of Egypt (10-11) in the round of 16.

Middleweight Angkhan Chomphuphuang won Cho Deok-Jin of South Korea (9-3) but was defeated by Vijender Kumar of India (3-13).

In addition to the wins of the two male boxers, Thailand also claims two more medals from the Beijing Games, a gold from female weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon and a silver from female taekwondo fighter Buttree Puedpong.
