Beijing Games flyweight boxing champion Somjit Jongjohor says the 20 million Baht prize money will not change him. Somjit will receive a total of about 20 million Baht from the Thai government and various corporate sponsors. On the evening of September 4, he and some other Thai Olympic athletes attended a party hosted by Thai Beverage Plc., an important sponsor of the Thai teams. “I congratulate all who represented Thailand and performed duties for the country. No matter if they won a medal or not, they have won the hearts of the Thai people,” said Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi, President of Thai Beverage. The company awarded Somjit and the other gold medalist, weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon, one million Baht each. Light welterweight boxer Manus Boonjumnong and taekwondo fighter Buttree Puedpong each received 500,000 Baht for their silver medals, while the rest of the athletes received 10,000 Baht per person. Somjit said his life has changed dramatically since he won the gold medal. “Wherever I go, there are always people greeting me and talking with me. I admit my life will not be the same. From now on I will be in the public’s eye and they are always watching whatever I am doing,” said the boxer. “But I believe there will not be a problem as I am a down-to-earth person. I know the Thai people are happy with my success and I would like to say that I would not be able to have this day if they did not give me morale supports. I am very glad to have made the Thai people happy.” “For the prize money, which is a lot, I think it will not change me. I went to the Olympic Games with the intention to claim a medal and now I have it. That is my pride and the pride of the Thai people as well. And I have planned to spend the money only on necessities under the principle of sufficiency without forgetting who I am,” said the gold medalist. |
