Thailand is guaranteed at least two bronze medals as at 19th Asian Youth Boxing Championship in Tehran, Iran, as two of its athletes have cruised to the quarterfinals.

Lightweight Phonwirat Patitangkho beat a Malaysian opponent by decision and will face a Kazakhstani quarterfinalist, while middleweight Sakkarin Chujit similarly defeated a Japanese pugilist to earn himself a quarterfinal spot against an Indian opponent.

The third Thai athlete, light welterweight contender Somsak Koobkookkruad, was defeated by a Kazakhstani, losing his chance to earn any medal at the Tehran event.

Thai amateur boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj said Sakkarin will have a good chance to beat the Indian, but Phonwirat’s Kazakhstani opponent is more formidable.

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) has decided to lift its year-long ban on General Taweep Jantararoj, after its disciplinary committee ruled that the Thai amateur boxing chief did not commit wrongdoing when he criticized AIBA’s officials at the Beijing Games in 2008.

According to the earlier reports, General Taweep, who is the president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) and an executive committee member of AIBA, earlier filed a petition to the Lausanne Civil Court when he was “suspended” from his post at AIBA, following his criticisms on the neutrality of the association’s judges and officials at the Beijing Games.

AIBA’s disciplinary committee recently ruled that General Taweep was not guilty in the defamation allegation, said the ABAT’s foreign affairs department on October 8. It also said AIBA has lifted the suspension on General Taweep.

Thai amateur boxing chief General Taweep Jantararoj is again raising issues of transparency at the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), while his court case against the association will be ruled on October 8.

According to the earlier reports, General Taweep, who is the president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (ABAT) and an executive committee member of AIBA, earlier filed a petition to the Lausanne Civil Court when he was “suspended” from his post at AIBA, following his criticisms on the neutrality of the association’s judges and officials at the Beijing Games in 2008.

The court has so far ordered AIBA to lift its suspension on the Thai boxing chief and is expected to give a ruling on the case on October 8, while General Taweep was recently reported by Khao Sod newspaper as saying that AIBA is receiving a number of complaints and protests on its judges. He also said some are requesting AIBA to review the results of matches at its recent boxing events and launch probes on certain officials.

The Thai national boxing squad will return home empty handed from the AIBA World Championships in Milan, Italy, as it last two members, flyweight boxer Amnat Ruenroeng and bantamweight Chatchai Butdee, have lost to Russian opponents in the quarterfinal bouts.

Amnat, who won a bronze medal from the 2008 edition of this championships, was leading the scores for most of the flyweight match on September 9, only to lose out in the last round to Russia’s Misha Aloyan who won by 7-5.

In the bantamweight event on the same day, Chatchai Butdee seemed to have a good start against Eduard Abzalimov, but the Russian’s superior experience proved to be too much for Chatchai in the last two rounds. Abzalimov won the bout by 11-6.
