Thai PM meets Denkaosan, Poonsawat

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has opened the Government House to receive boxers Denkaosan Kaovichit and Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym who have just returned from their world title matches abroad.

Denkaosan successfully defended his WBA flyweight title against Japan’s Daiki Kameda on October 6, while Poonsawat stopped Bernard Dunne and took away the WBA bantamweight title from the Irish pugilist on September 26.

At the meeting held at the Government House in the morning of October 8, Prime Minister Abhisit reportedly told the two boxers to maintain their discipline and training as well as saving the money they have earned from the fights.

Denkaosan won't survive tougher opponent, says writer

Denkaosan Kaovichit would not be able to retain WBA flyweight his title long if he kept using the stalling strategy in the ring, says Banmuang newspaper columnist “Por Pan”.

The sportswriter is disappointed at the champion’s performance in his WBA title defense against Daiki Kameda on October 6, although Denkaosan was able to retain his title.

“If that was all Denkaosan could do, which is continuously grappling the opponent rather than actually trying to fight, he would not have future. He is in his 30s already and does not have the stamina to endure fight with a younger boxer, not to mention the power of his punch that is not enough to land a knockout,” said Por Pan.

Kameda's gym protests to WBA, wants rematch with Denkaosan

Daiki Kameda’s gym is preparing to protest the result of the recent WBA flyweight match that allows Denkaosan Kaovichit to retain his title, while demanding for a rematch.

Japanese challenger Kameda fought Thai title holder Denkaosan in the match held in Osaka on Tuesday October 6. The Thai emerged as the winner in his second title defense, earning scores 115-113 from two judges, while the third gave a 114-114 draw.

Noriyuki Igarashi, head of Kameda's gym, said he would submit a protest to the World Boxing Association as he believed Kameda should have won the fight.

Pongsaklek to fight Richard Garcia on October 22

Thailand’s WBC “interim” flyweight title holder Pongsaklek Wonjongkam is scheduled to fight WBC flyweight ninth-place contender Richard Garcia this month.

According to a press conference held yesterday, the match of Pongsaklek and Filipino pugilist Garcia will be part of a boxing and muaythai event at the southern Thai town of Krabi on October 22, and will be broadcasted by Thailand’s Channel Seven network from 2.00 p.m. onward.

Promoter Wirat Wachiraratanawong said the Krabi match would be the last fight of Pongsaklek this year, and the boxer may get to challenge the non-interim champion in February next year. The title is currently held by Japan’s Naito Daisuke, who will defend it against fellow Japanese boxer Koki Kameda in Tokyo on November 29.

Denkaosan beats Kameda to retain WBA title

WBA flyweight champion Denkaosan Kaovichit of Thailand has defeated Japanese challenger Daiki Kameda by 2-0 decision in Japan yesterday.

At his second title defense held at the Osaka Central Gymnasium in Osaka on Tuesday October 6, Denkaosan was able to use good timing to score many hits, mostly aimed at the body, while successful at fending off Kameda’s offenses.

By sixth round, the Japanese challenger seemed to realize he was not in good position and started to aggressively pressure the Thai. In response, Denkaosan focused on blocking Kameda and swiftly avoiding engagement.

Usanakorn beats Ivanova to win WBC title

Thailand’s Usanakorn Kokietgym has become the new WBC female bantamweight title holder after beating Bulgaria’s Galina Koleva Ivanova yesterday.

Ivanova lost her title to the Thai challenger by unanimous decision of 97-93, 96-94, and 92-92 after 10 rounds of fight at the match held in Usanakorn’s home province of Nakorn Ratchasima on October 5.

Usanakorn was reportedly performing well and able to land many good hits, but became injured in the ninth round, from a head clash. The Bulgarian pushed harder in the last two rounds, but it was already too late for her to turn the table.

Upset fans may boycott on Ratchadamnern event this Wednesday

Ratchadamnern Stadium experienced some rowdy protest against the judges by some muaythai fans yesterday, which may impact the upcoming event on this Wednesday.

Khaosod newspaper reported that a number of influential muaythai fans at the stadium were upset by the judges who decided to let Ananchai Lookbanyai win the five-round match of the “Suek Petch Chao Phraya” event on October 5 against his opponent Tablang Toyota Rayong.

The disgruntled fans reportedly held a protest, which resulted in some other spectators leaving the stadium during the later matches of the event. Khaosod reported that the fans may decide to boycott the Wednesday event of the stadium.

Denkaosan-Kameda first photo op turns ugly

The first encounter of WBA flyweight champion Denkaosan Kaovichit of Thailand and Japan’s boxing star Daiki Kameda ended with some hostile gestures.

The Denkaosan’s second WBA title defense against Kameda will be held at the Osaka Central Gymnasium in Osaka on October 6. The two boxers, who earlier passed medical examinations held separately in different cities, appeared together at the official press conference at the Bay Tower Osaka Hotel on October 5.

At noon, the two were weighed. The stockier Denkaosan was found be by 111.7 while the tall Japanese challenger was exactly 112. After the weigh-in, the Japanese journalists asked the two to shake hands and post for pictures, but Kameda reportedly acted aggressively and squeezed the Thai champion’s hand. The two appeared to wrestle each other for some time, while the Japanese reporters booed at them.

Thangthong may challenge Agbeko after next bout

Thailand’s IBF Pan Pacific bantamweight title holder Thangthong Kiattaweesuk may get to challenge the IBF world champion Joseph Agbeko if the Thai is able to defeat his next opponent this month.

Promoter Ekkarat “Jimmy” Chaichotchuang expects Thangthong to move up in the IBF rank if he beats North Korean Young Sang Gun at the match scheduled in Ratchaburi, Thailand, on October 29. The fight, which will be Thangthong's six defense for his IBF Pan Pacific title, will be broadcasted by Thailand's Channel Seven network from 3.00 p.m. onward.

Ekkarat believes he would be able to force a mandatory title defense between Thangthong and Ghana's Agbeko, who is under the patronage of the famed promoter Don King.

Ivanova defends WBC title against Usanakorn today

WBC female bantamweight title holder Galina Koleva Ivanova will fight Thai challenger Usanakorn Kokietgym in Thailand today.

The match of Bulgarian world champion Ivanova and Thai Usanakorn will be held as part of the event to celebrate 86th birthday of revered Thai monk Luang Por Koon at Ban Rai School in Nakorn Ratchasima on October 5. The bout will be televised by the Channel Three network from 2.30 p.m. onward.

The two boxers passed a weigh-in yesterday, each found to be exactly 118 pounds. After the weigh-in, Usanakorn said she would spend only two rounds to observe Ivanova and would end the match within the fifth round. Ivanova, however, pointed out that her experience and skills are more superior and she is not afraid of defending her title in Usanakorn's hometown as she is used to fighting outside Bulgaria.
